Things I’m Reading
God at Work, Anthony Bradley. I will review when finished…but it’s definitely different than I thought it would be.
The Odyssey, Homer. I’m flipping between reading the hardcopy and listening on audio as I mow the lawn. Trying to finish before my daughter needs to read it for school. A fascinating book.
The Histories, Herodotus. This is a really fun history, and incredibly readable. Lewis said classics become classics because they are readable and Herodotus is certainly case-in-point.
Redwall, Brian Jacques. Andie is reading this to the family in the evening—it is really good! The kids have been watching the show on Canon+, and it is surprisingly good, as well.
Things I’ve Watched Recently
Prince of Egypt (1998). Loralai was reading through Exodus in her Omnibus curriculum, and the other kids were studying the story of the Exodus in history—so it was a perfect time to bust out a movie and discuss. I remember this movie coming out when I was a kid, and immediately being annoyed by how unlike the biblical story it was. However, re-watching it as an adult, I was struck by how well-made the movie was. While it didn’t really capture the biblical story of the Exodus, as a piece of art in its own right, it holds up pretty well.
Fort Apache (1948). The first of John Ford and John Wayne’s so-called “Cavalry Trilogy”, this one features Henry Fonda as a straight-laced military commander who runs quite at odds with Wayne’s more frontier-realist character. I’d forgotten how good Fonda is in this film.
Sometimes a Great Notion (1971). I wasn’t expecting to watch this movie—or anything like it—in the faith communication class I took back in June. But this was a gut-wrencher, and thinking through how I would interact with the characters here was certainly an instructive educational experience.
Things I’m Working on (writing)
A Healthy Marriage; I’m in the process of turning my series of marriage sermons into a short booklet. Hopefully ready before Christmas.
Thoughts on Education. I have a really long post written that needs re-written for cohesiveness, and maybe split into a couple of posts.
Things I’m Working on (preaching)
Currently I’m preaching through Genesis, the first book of the Bible—I’ve been taking it in chunks, and write now I’m working through the life of Jacob. I just got a copy of Sam Emadi’s book on Joseph, to start prepping for the final section of the book.
1 John is in the docket for the start of next year—not going to lie, this is probably the most intimidating book in the NT to me, outside perhaps of Revelation.
Romans. I won’t start into Romans for nearly a year, but I’m going to start studying it with a young man I meet regularly with—tool tip for pastors, double up your sermon prep and discipleship!
